Do you believe in new year's resolutions? Spoiler Do you believe in new year's resolutions? Spoiler - I don't.

But I do believe in goal-setting and regular check-ins, which is what I do to get fired up at the beginning of each year! Taking the time to map out your goals for the year right NOW can help you...

Get motivated
Notice changes you might want to make to your life or habits
Reflect and be grateful

And so much more!

Here's my goal-setting process, step by step. I challenge you to try it for yourself!

✨ Reflect on the Past Year

Write a couple quick bullets of things that I accomplished in the previous year. Even if you didn't accomplish all your past resolutions, you'll most likely see that it's still easy to come up with 5-10 bullet points, and easy to do the same in the year ahead.

✨ Brainstorm Big Goals for the Year Ahead, by Category

Bucketing your goals into different categories can help each list feel smaller and more attainable. You can have as many categories as you need!

β€’ Personal Goals
β€’ Professional Goals
β€’ Relationship Goals
β€’ Travel Goals
β€’ Money Goals
β€’ Etc!

✨ Break Big Goals into Baby Steps

What is one thing you can do in the next week, month, or quarter to move in the direction of accomplishing your big goals?

✨ Check In Regularly

Plan a regular cadence to check in and repeat Step 3. Bonus – do this with a friend or significant other to keep each other accountable!

And there you go! See how far you get!

PS - if you don't have an accountability buddy, feel free to share your goals below, save this post, & come back to this space throughout the year when you need it. I'm rooting for you 🫢🏽

Do you do goal planning or resolution setting this time of year? What does your process look like?

Even in freezing temps you'll find me in the water Even in freezing temps you'll find me in the water 😌 What's on your experience wish list for 2024?

*I don't like the term 'bucket list' so I refer to mine as an experience wish list instead but to each their own!

Some first-time experiences for me in 2023 included:

β€’ taking my very first cold dip (sooooo cold but you feel electric afterwards!) (πŸ‘‰πŸ½πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Slide 3)

β€’ trying freediving (it still terrifies me)

β€’ doing my very first Yacht Week in greece

β€’ staying at the hotel Succession was filmed at in Norway (pictured + πŸ‘‰πŸ½πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Slide 4)

β€’ speaking at a conference about the future of work and what it means for travel bloggers, something i'm so passionate about and a massive step for my career (πŸ‘‰πŸ½πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Slide 6)

β€’ swimming with whale sharks

β€’ taking a sunset boat ride on the Bosphorus Strait on a solo trip to Turkey (πŸ‘‰πŸ½πŸ‘‰πŸ½ Slide 5)

β€’ seeing the Chocolate Hills in Bohol with my parents

β€’ driving across the Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway (google it because omg 🀯)

This weekend I plan to sit down and write my wish list for 2024. Give me some inspiration in the comments so we can manifest it all together!

What are your wildest dreams for the year ahead?
Here's my honest tally of vacation days I used in Here's my honest tally of vacation days I used in 2023.

Did you count up the days? Would you ever share your own? πŸ‘€

Taking time off can still feel like such an uncomfortable gray area. Last year, I decided to start sharing the number of days I take off to start an honest conversation with you all and let you know that it's OKAY to invest time back into yourself (see my #TimeOffTally from last year pinned at the top of my feed!!)

I might be an extreme example – I push boundaries to write about career culture with firsthand experience – but I am not alone!! ⬆️ PTO usage is UP ⬆️ for individuals and companies across the country. More Americans took time off in 2023 than they have in years (according to WSJ). Were you one of them?

If yes, yay! If no, why not?

And before you say "because travel is expensive," it's important to mention that time off doesn't have to be travel related!

It's about investing in yourself. Giving yourself time to rest, to spend time with loved ones, and to explore hobbies. For example, I took time off in 2023 for mental health, to see family, and to get my freediving certification.

Don't have enough vacation days to begin with?

Comment 'PTO' below and I'll send you my tips on how to negotiate more time off in 2024! πŸ’»

And, follow @racheloffduty for more work & travel tips! Together, we'll take the T(aboo) out of PTO for good!
